Senior High School in Indonesia consist of Sekolah Menengah Umum (SMU)/Senior High School and Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan (SMK)/Vocational Senior High School. Commonly, a student have to pass 6 grades in Sekolah Dasar (SD)/Elementary School then continue to Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP)/Junior High School. 3 grades in Junior High School have to pass before continue the education to Senior High School or Vocational Senior High School.

Senior High School teaches common knowledges. There are also 3 grades in Senior High School to be passed, before continue the education level.  First and second grade Senior High School have no major. It is a level for student to learn all the knowledge before determine which subjects will be learn more. The Senior High School majors are Natural Sciences and Social Sciences. Some schools have the third major, Language. 

The majors in Senior High School level still in debating progress now. Some people think, it is not necessary to divide the subjects learned by students. Any way, some universities have policy to accept graduated Senior High School to choose any major the want to study in the university. Previously, natural sciences graduated Senior High School can choose both natural sciences and social sciences major in university or college, but the social sciences graduated Senior High School can only choose social sciences major in the university.

Actually, the division of major in Senior High School accomodate the interest of a student before choosing a major for the next level of education. In fact, there is not too much different subjects learned. But natural sciences subjects have more portion for natural science major, and social sciences subjects teaches more for social sciences major students. 

Senior High School is different to Vocational High School. The Vocational High School accepted a students to learn certain skills in the school. The major have been determined since first grade in Vocational Senior High School. The students will learn all about their choiched major until graduated from the school. The common major in Vocational High School are Automotive, Electronic, Computer, Mechanic, Accounting, Agriculture, Fisheries, Tourism, etc. Some vocational Senior High School offers some majors to be studied, some school only provided a certain major.
