1. Samosir Island Area

Previous  Toba Lake Facts Measured Using Google Earth

Samosir Island is an island in the center of Toba Lake. The island estimated created due to the geological process beneath the Toba caldera. The magma and gas tension beneath the Toba caldera pushed the earth mantle upward and created a land in the centre of Toba Lake named Samosir Island. The Samosir Island estimated as the weakest part of the Toba caldera earth mantle. The tension pushed Samosir Island land resulted the deepest area in Toba Lake to about 500 meter depth.

Image: Samosir Island Polygon Measurement

The image above show the measurement area of Samosir Island about 647, 29 square kilometers, with outer line shoreline perimeter of Samosir Island about 134, 10 kilometers length. The polygon created using add polygon feature in Google Earth. The accuracy of the measurement depends on the details of point placements that connects each lines. The smaller the picture scale while putting the points, the higher the measurement accuracy. The measurement conducted in 2016, using the Google Earth picture of Toba Lake in 2016. Sometime the same measurement will resulted different result if using different time satellite photo in Google Earth. It is probably caused by the change of the geological features that recorded in the pictures. The changes can be caused by the development activities in the area, changes by natural, such as flooding, landslide, and the level of the lake water surface.
