Sumatra Island





Sumatra Island is one of the biggest island in Indonesia. It is the third biggest island in Indonesia after Kalimantan and Papua. Sumatra is in western part of Indonesia as the most western Indonesia boundaries. In west of Sumatra is Indian Ocean or Samudera Hindia in Bahasa Indonesia, Java Sea and Malayan Peninsula in east, Andaman Islands, Malayan Peninsula and South Asia region in north, Java Island and South Java Sea in south.

Administratively, there are eight provinces in Sumatra mainland and two provinces in Sumatra smaller islands region. The provinces in Sumatra mainland are, from North to South: Nangroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD), North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, Jambi, Bengkulu, South Sumatra and Lampung. Islands provinces are Riau Islands Province in north of Java Sea and Bangka Belitung Province in south of Riau Islands Province, between Sumatra Island and Kalimantan Island.

For administrative purpose, provinces in Sumatra Island divided to two regions. They are Northern Sumatra Region and Southern Sumatra Region. Provinces in Northern Sumatra Region are Nangroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD), North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau and Riau Islands. Provinces in Southern Sumatra Region are Jambi, Bengkulu, South Sumatra, Lampung and Bangka Belitung. The image Provinces in Sumatra Island shows the position of the provinces in Sumatra Island. Image orientation is modified to accommodate the view of the provinces' borders. Bottom part is West, top is East, in left is North and right is South. 


Sumatra Island is surrounded by many smaller islands. Those smaller islands are included to closest province region in the area. Nangroe Aceh Darussalam province has Weh Island, Beurueh and Nasi Islands in North area, Meulaboh and Banyak Islands in west area. North Sumatra has Nias and Batu Islands in west area, smaller islands such as Berhala, Salah Nama in east area. West Sumatra has smaller island in west area, they are Mentawai and Pagai Islands and Riau has Bengkalis and Rupat Island in east area. Riau Island province is a province that has many islands from Lingga, Tanjung Balai Karimun, Batam, Bintan, Anambas Islands until Natuna Islands.


Bengkulu province has Enggano Island in west area, Jambi has some small island in east area. Bangka Belitung province itself is an Islands province that consist os Bangka Island and Belitung Island and some smaller island around the Bangka dan Belitung Island. Lampung province has smaller islands in south area of the province, they are Panjang Island and Krakatoa Islands that known as volcanic island which erupted in 1883. The eruption caused the Krakatoa island almost submerged below the sea surface, but geological process in the area created new island known as Anak Krakatoa Island.
